For people shaped by how they grew up
Therapy for Narcissistic Family Patterns, Enmeshment & Emotional Neglect
Life can look perfectly fine on the outside, while you feel stuck in patterns you don't quite understand. Often they began in a family where you learned to stay quiet, keep the peace, or look after everyone else's feelings before your own.
Who this is for
Perhaps you grew up feeling unseen, criticised or controlled. Nothing dramatic may have happened, which can make it harder to name. Your needs were met on the surface, but there wasn't much room for your feelings, so you learned to manage on your own.
Or perhaps it was the opposite: a family so close there was little room to become your own person. A parent may have leaned on you for emotional support, crossed your boundaries, or needed to know everything, and wanting space or saying no felt like betrayal.
It is also for people who grew up with a narcissistic or emotionally immature parent, where love felt conditional and you were the one who adjusted. And for those raised in collectivist families, where obligation, hierarchy, loyalty and face-saving pressures shaped what you were allowed to feel or want.
How it shows up now
These patterns rarely stay in childhood. They tend to show up in your closest relationships:
- Feeling numb, shut down or distant, or not quite knowing what you feel
- Over-giving, people-pleasing, or losing yourself to keep the peace
- Struggling to know where you end and others begin, or feeling responsible for a parent's feelings
- Perfectionism, and never quite feeling good enough
- Being drawn to partners who feel familiar, even when they hurt
- Guilt when you set a boundary with family, or resentment when you don't
- The same fight with a partner that never quite resolves
They made sense once. They were how you stayed connected, or stayed safe, in the family you had.
How we work together
We start by listening. You don't need to have the words for it yet. Together we notice where these patterns came from, what they have been protecting, and how they play out with the people closest to you now.
Drawing on Relational Life Therapy and Internal Family Systems, we get to know the younger part of you that learned to cope this way, with curiosity rather than blame, and strengthen the wiser adult part of you that can choose differently. We do this with respect for your family and culture, and without asking you to cut anyone off. We'll progress at a pace that's right for you.
This can be individual work, or couples therapy when the pattern is playing out between you and a partner. If you recognise yourself as shut down or distant, you might also find the therapy for men page helpful. If you keep going back to a relationship that hurts, read more about trauma bonds.
What you gain
Over time, many people find they can name what they feel, hold a boundary with less guilt, and choose relationships that feel less like the old story. Ultimately, we deserve to live a life that genuinely belongs to us.
